Bought a resale flat and the aircon piping is hidden in the false ceiling. I have the intention to move in without hacking as the unit is nicely renovated. However, I intend to change the aircon and was told by a big company at imm that changing the existing aircon piping is a nightmare as holes need to be cut in the false ceiling and major patching up work needs to be done, costing close to $2k just running the piping alone. The alternative would just be to use back the existing piping and just change the fan coils. Not sure if there are reliable aircon companies that can help change piping without the kind of hassle that this big company described.

YES u need to change the pipes and insulation (impt)

NOT a big job for opening access on the false ceiling

Just need to cut (make access) openings in the false ceiling at a few locations. After replacement of pipes, the access fiber board slaps will be closed (and use white cement to patch) and prob paint white too

Use only aircon company that can do both (the access holes and box-back the access) and the actual aircon work

Get 2-3 quotes, aircon company need to do a site survey
Most charge a nominal checking fee (and u get a chance to talk to the repr)

Make sure (on the phone) that the aircon company can do both (before the site survey)

I have had landlord that did 2 similiar aircon pipe replacement and it is common for aircon company to encourage you to just change the FCU (fan coil unit) and CU (condensing unit)

Hi,

It is advisable to change the aircon piping especially if you could afford it.

2 reasons:
(1) For hygiene reason.
(2) To remove any hidden defects due to wear and tear.

It is not uncommon to replace the old aircon piping when coming to changing of aircon unit after a purchase.
The whole task is a one off thing and it is encouraging. The hassale the company that describe to you is true, and is genuine.

My suggestion is list this company as high priority since they are outright honest to you and not afraid of losing you as a customer by painting a pretty picture and can't deliver in the end.

Site survey is free if they are engaged at the end of the day.

Hope the above answer to your main concerns, but if there are more queries, please feel free to contact me at 90110636  , or email: ling.ck7@gmail.com if more information is needed.
I'll be glad to assist.

I’ve seen quite a few cases like this when clients move into a resale flat with concealed aircon trunking. What the company told you isn’t wrong — if the piping is fully hidden behind a false ceiling, changing it usually means cutting access points, re-running copper pipes, then patching and repainting after. That’s why the cost can easily hit a couple of thousand just for piping work.

That said, you do have options:
• Reuse existing piping: Many people go with this if the pipes are still in good condition (no leaks, no corrosion, no signs of choking). A flushing service plus new fan coil units can sometimes last you for years without issues.
• Selective access points: Some smaller, more flexible contractors may agree to open only strategic parts of the ceiling, instead of hacking multiple areas. It still involves patching, but less messy than what large chain installers describe.
• Check pipe age: If the existing system is very old, you might want to bite the bullet and change everything while it’s still early, so you don’t risk future leaks that will damage ceilings or walls.

If you’d like, I can connect you with reliable aircon contractors who’ve handled resale flats with concealed trunking before. They can give you a second opinion on whether your existing pipes are still serviceable or if replacement is really necessary. Read More
