**Keeping the original cabinet carcasses (frames) and refreshing just the exterior is a proven, cost-effective renovation strategy, but repainting with a brush or roller is usually a waste of money.**

Most Singapore kitchen cabinets are finished in high-pressure laminate (HPL). In our humid climate, paint does not adhere well to slick, non-porous laminate surfaces. Normal DIY painting or hand-rolling leads to brush marks, a sticky feel, and peeling or chipping within 6 to 12 months near the heat of the stove and sink.

### What Actually Works if Your Cabinets Are Structurally Sound

1. **Option A: Architectural Vinyl Wrapping (Best Value: ~S$600 – S$1,500)**
* Professional companies use heavy-duty interior architectural film (e.g., 3M DI-NOC or Bodaq).
* It takes just 1 to 2 days, creates zero hacking dust, resists kitchen moisture, and completely covers the dated wood-grain or vintage colour with modern matte, fluted, or stone textures.
* It typically lasts 5 to 7 years without chipping.

2. **Option B: Replacing Just the Doors (~S$1,500 – S$2,500)**
* If the internal plywood carcase is sturdy and free of termites or water bloat, engage a carpenter to measure, fabricate, and install **new laminate cabinet doors and soft-close Blum hinges** onto the existing frames.
* You get a 100% brand-new look and feel from the outside at less than one-third the cost of rebuilding custom carpentry (which runs S$120–S$160 per foot run).

3. **Option C: Change the Hardware First (~S$100 – S$200 DIY)**
* Swap out dated vintage handles for modern brushed brass, matte black, or minimalist edge-pull profiles. Paired with a deep degreasing clean, hardware alone dramatically updates the look.

### The Verdict

* **Do NOT:** Hand-paint over laminate doors.
* **DO:** Check under the sink for wood rot or water bloat first. If the interior wood is dry and solid, **wrap the fronts or change the doors only**. You will save S$6,000–S$10,000 while achieving an updated aesthetic.

Depending on the condition of the cabinets, it is completely possible to retain them especially if they are of good quality.

One common alternative is to swap out the cabinet doors, repaint, or refresh the laminate.

This is something your contractor can probably advise as well depending on the specific cabinet you have!
