Space is scarce in Singapore, which is why HDB jumbo flats are such a big deal here. Before moving out for security reasons, even President Halimah Yacob herself was living in a jumbo flat in Yishun!

 

What are HDB jumbo flats?

Jumbo flats are supersized HDB units created in 1989 in order to make unsold three-room and four-room HDB flats more attractive on the market. The walls between two adjacent flats were knocked down to create one giant flat.

There are only 2,900 of such jumbo flats in Singapore, about 80% of which are located in Woodlands.

 

How are jumbo flats different from regular HDB flats?

Formed from the merger of two flats, jumbo HDB flats tend to be much bigger than your average 3- or 4-room flat, at about 149 to 199 square metres (1,604 to 2,142 square feet). This makes them particularly attractive for multi-generation households.

As the Housing & Development Board (HDB) is not currently planning to create more jumbo flats, the only way to get your hands on one is to buy it on the HDB resale market.

According to a Straits Times article, jumbo flats are also priced at a premium, at about $650,000 to $950,000. We say: Challenge accepted!
