As a major education hub, district 21 is home to several Singapore’s renowned educational institutions situated in Clementi. What is often overlooked about district 21 however is that it is home to Singapore’s rich greenery and suburban shopping centres. The area comprises mainly HDB apartments and condominiums including Gardenvista, The Creek at Bukit and Pandan Valley. A main part of district 21 is Upper Bukit Timah that literally means “tin hill”. The area was a jungle inhabited primarily by tigers that were removed in 1845 by the British during their colonization of the Singaporean island which was followed by its subsequent urban development. Upper Bukit Timah provides a great variety of lush greenery and spaces for leisure activities like picnics or a game of Frisbee at the Botanic Gardens, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Bukit Timah Saddle Club and Raffles Town Club. Shopping centres like Serene Centre, Bukit Timah Plaza, Beauty World Shopping Centre and Sixth Avenue also scatter across the area. Several car showrooms are also located within Upper Bukit Timah including Honda, BMW, Hyundai and Nissan. Clementi on the other hand is evidently an education hub that comprises numerous renowned educational institutions that include the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, the Singapore Science Park and the Institute of Molecular Biology just to name a few. Several leisure places are also available within Clementi like the Clementi Woods Park and the Kent Ridge Park for nearby residents to have a personal quiet time. Clementi Mall is also a main attraction as a mixed-use development that is directly linked to the Clementi MRT Station and air-conditioned bus interchange. It is often overlooked that Clementi acquires great historical significance as a residential place previously known as “Sussex Estate” to cater to the families of British senior non-commissioned officers in the mid-1950s. This very estate was retained even when Clementi began development in 1975 but was later demolished in 1997 to make way for other practical uses. Another key feature of Clementi is the steel truss railway bridge that crosses Sungei Ulu Pandan that forms part of the Jurong KTMB Railway Line which had the purpose of transporting manufactured products from Jurong to Malaysia. This was however closed in the early 1990s but the track still remains abandoned, attracting much interest from the public seeking a piece of Singapore’s history.
