Asked by
I am an owner of a HDB and had lived in my HDB for 7 years (i.e., I fulfilled the 5-yr MOP requirement already). Recently my husband bought a private condo. Can I move to that private condo with him, and leave the HDB vacant (or let my parents-in-law stay there for free)?

The purpose is to declare to IRAS that we stay in condo, and hence getting the property tax of the condo taxed at Owner-occupier-rate, whilst the property tax of the HDB taxed at non-owner-stay-rate.

Assuming both you and your husband have both met the required MOP on your HDB, you should be able to do so, as long as your parents-in-law are eligibility to be occupiers of your HDB. Alternatively, you may choose to rent out your HDB for extra income.

Happy to help with renting out the HDB if that is the direction you wish to take as well.

Good day to you.

Once the MOP for your HDB unit has been completed, you and your husband can relocate to the condo. After you have changed your residential address on your IC, your HDB will be categorized under the "Non-owner-occupier tax rate." However, make sure that your parents-in-law are not obligated to meet their own MOP requirements.
