I'd say that it is likely to be able to purchase a 2 bedrooms unit in the east, if your intended purchase is not strictly restricted to freehold units. Having stayed in the east for more than 20 years of my life and focusing my sales in the east, I believe that I should be able to help you through with both the sales and purchase process. Yes, you can get 2 bedroom in the East with less than $800k. The projects are mostly located around Changi and Kembangan area. I am currently helping a client to buy a 2 bedroom in the East with similar budget, and I will be able to provide with more detail on the units available on sale.
