Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get some advice on a situation with my HDB application.

My ex-spouse and I have mutually agreed to a divorce, and I’ll be selling my share of our HDB flat to her at an agreed price. I’ve already completed my HFE, and I’m eligible to apply for a short-lease 2-room BTO as I’m above 55 years old.

However, my application was recently cancelled by HDB. The reason stated was the proximity condition under the Married Child Priority Scheme / Proximity Housing Grant (MCPS/PHG) — that I must live within 4 km of my child’s flat for a 5-year period. My child and their spouse had bought their flat about 4 years ago under this scheme, and their MOP has not yet been reached.

I really need to apply and get a place to live on my own, and I can only afford a BTO flat. Has anyone faced a similar situation before? Is there any way to appeal or request an exception from HDB due to a change in family circumstances like divorce?

Sorry to hear about your situation. You may try writing in directly to HDB to appeal the decision as you described here, or perhaps try for a BTO/ Resale that is within 4 km of the flat as advised by HDB.

Hi,

1) Your main concern is that you are unable to get an approved HFE.
2) From your descriptions, it is the timeline that stops you from getting it.
3) You will be able to get hold of an approved HFE When your child's HDB MOP is met.
4) As for your current situation, the whole divorce process will takes about 9 months to receive the final court order. It is only then, the whole process is considered as completed.
5) You properly will be in a better position to negotiate with HDB to get an approved HFE to apply for the designated BTO by then once the whole divorce process is completed.
6) You should focus on where you could get an accommodation after divorce till receive keys for the BTO. This period will not be immediate but could last up to 5 years or more.

I suggest for you to look into this further details on the basis of rejection and seek your MP to appeal for your case.
