Hi, if the agent don’t have a photo copy of your pass, how does he or she know that you are a on a valid pass or an illegal overstayer in Singapore ?

  • Other documents can verify the status, e.g the Proof of Employee with signs issued by the employer, or providing the FIN number only, no copy or pictures of the pass.

    Collecting/Copying pass only use in:
    The collection, use or disclosure is required by the law; or
    It is necessary to establish or verify an individual’s identity to a high degree of accuracy.

    I wonder if this case requires a high degree of fidelity or not? and if it is, does it mentioned anywhere in law? e.g law of renting real estate.

    I am posting this inquiry because the new stricter law of PDPA does not mention it as an exceptional case for ID collection. (only buying/selling real estate and hotels, not rents)

Thank you for the question, I am sure with constant updating of regulations, it can get quite confusing for individuals who are not in this trade to understand what can or cannot be done.

As part of due diligence required of a real estate salesperson, we are required to screen the profile of the prospective tenants therefore we will require to have a copy of the work pass or ID after sighting the physical copy for verification. The landlord will also be required to keep a copy for their retention as part of the due diligence process.
