Introduction
Lakeside is a beautiful region in Singapore where residents can fully enjoy life within a natural and refreshing environment. The region is located in District 22, close to Jurong Lake in the western part of Singapore. The area is surrounded by parklands. As the famous Chinese Garden is situated adjacent, the region of Lakeside has much Chinese influence, particularly in its physical environment. Well organized streets, cleanliness, and an abundance of trees along the road characterize this picturesque town. Although there are highrise apartments in Lakeside, there is much open space to create a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
Lakeside is undergoing rapid development and it is destined to be converted into a key leisure destination. The key attractions of the area are the Chinese and Japanese gardens. There are plans for the expansion of water sports activities and for building other attractions in the region. All these developments will further enhance the standard of living in Lakeside. Places of Interest
The aptly named Lakeside region has an abundance of water bodies. With the implementation of the proposed Government plans, Lakeside is destined to be a popular leisure zone. There are several worthwhile places to visit in the surrounding area.
• The Chinese Garden – Built in 1975, the garden was designed by Prof. Yuen-Chen Yu, a well-known architect from Taiwan. There are magnificent architectural pieces, perfectly complementing the natural environment of the park. The primary theme of the park is Chinese gardening art. It is fashioned on the Imperial style of Chinese architecture and art of landscaping.
• Singapore Science Centre – Blending of science and art makes this centre a rare tourist attraction. There are about 1000 interactive exhibits that bring to light different facets of science. The kinetic garden is a highlight of this centre and it comprises 35 interactive sculptures, exhibits, and displays. The Omni-max, with its massive domed screen, is another must-see.
• Chinese Heritage Centre – Built in 1995 the sole aim of this museum was to spread the knowledge and understanding of the Chinese Community living overseas. There is a garden where many visitors take a stroll. There are galleries in this museum that document the Chinese culture and tradition.
Shopping/Dining
Although few supermarkets are located in Lakeside thus far, large shopping malls are situated in the adjacent regions.

• Taman Jurong Shopping Centre – Located near the Jurong Stadium this shopping mall houses 61 specialty shops which include groceries and other regular items, dress materials, furniture, book, watches, etc. There is a separate food court in this mall too.
• Boon Lay Shopping Centre – Shops of many varieties ranging from children’s goods to fashion wear can be found in this mall. There is also a wet market and a hawker centre situated in this mall.Influenced by the predominantly Chinese ambience there are many restaurants where traditional Chinese dishes are served. However, other restaurants offering delicious Thai, Continental, and European cuisines are also found in the region.

With massive development plans being undertaken, Lakeside will soon be transformed into a leading tourist spot in this part of the country. Present Lakeside offers a clean and tranquil environment with plenty of open space for its residents. Residents of the region also have access to all the contemporary facilities and amenities. There are educational institutions imparting high standard of education, reputable banks and ample facilities for shopping and entertainment. There are several clinics in addition to the Alexandra Hospital, and Jurong General Hospital is slated to open soon. With a large expanse of parks and water bodies, the region also offers unmatched recreational facilities for every age.
