District 8, also known as Little India is a historical and culturally rich area well known to Singaporeans and tourists for being the one location where authentic Indian cuisine, spices and textiles are found.
Getting to Little India is made convenient with the North-East MRT line of Little India and Farrer Park stations. District 8 is also within walking distance from Bugis station which is on the East-West line.
Alternatively, you can take a taxi in but as traffic will be much slower in Little India, it would be better to take a train there and walk from the station.
Cuisine & Shopping
Little India is surrounded by several malls of which the most popular and commonly known one is Mustafa Centre. Other malls in the area include The Verge (formerly Tekka Mall), Little India Arcade, Serangoon Plaza and City Square Mall.
There is also a wet market called Tekka Market stocked with vegetables, fish, meat, spices and flowers.
Food centres are also numerous in the vicinity as are North and South Indian restaurants.
In Little India, there are no shortage of jewellery to buy as well.
Sim Lim Centre, Singapore’s perennial IT mall is just around the corner from Little India making it convenient for the residents in District 8 to shop for electronic goods.
If you’re looking for traditional Indian garments or textiles, you’ll certainly find it here in District 8.
Property Prices are better
Other than its cuisine and vibrant culture, Little India is close enough to the city without sporting the same property prices. In fact when compared with the prices in the city, Little India is highly attractive.
The average prices for a condo vary according to projects, but generally have a price tag of $1,750 psf for a one-bedroom unit and $1,450 psf to $1,550 psf for a three-bedroom unit.
With property prices shooting up elsewhere, living in Little India with its access to three MRT stations, shopping malls and eateries is not only convenient but worthy of investment.
