District 22, which is situated in the Western region of Singapore is widely known for its industrial and residential areas. Comprising of Boon Lay, Jurong and Tuas, district 22 is a key industrial area that contributes greatly to Singapore’s economy. However as we delve deeper into the area, you would find certain leisure places including a golf course and ice-skating rink. A range of HDB apartments and condominiums including The Lakeshore and Lakeville can be found here.
Named after a famous landowner in the late 19th and 20th century, Mr. Chew Boon Lay, Boon Lay has changed significantly from a swampy jungle to Singapore’s first industrial estate with its very first factory, the National Iron and Steel Mills. Places of interest within Boon Lay include the Jurong Hill Park that has a 360 degree vista of Jurong from its deliberately constructed spiral tower that provides panoramic view of the region. Situated on the hilltop is the Garden of Fame where prominent political figures including Queen Elizabeth II, President Suharto and President Bejamin Henry Sheares had planted trees on. A second main attraction is the Jurong Bird Park which is one of the largest bird parks in the world showcasing 600 different species of birds. Avid foodies can also find a little treasure trove in the world’s largest chocolate company, Barry Callebaut which is also located here in Boon Lay.
Jurong consists mainly of the Jurong Industrial Estate that caters to the working class. However, to make the region more vibrant for its visitors and nearby residents, the Government of Singapore has transformed the Jurong Lake District by constructing waterfront hotels, parks and playground in Lakeside; building JCube, a new shopping mall that acquires an Olympic-sized ice-skating rink and building a 24km network of park connectors from Bukit Batok to Jurong East MRT Station. Two new public housing estates where 1,200 new apartments would be built will also be rolled out to Singaporeans. This is on top of the pre-existing flora and fauna of the Chinese and Japanese Gardens and the Jurong Country Club; as well as other shopping facilities including the IMM shopping mall that houses Giant Hypermart and Daiso.
Another main industrial centre other than Jurong is Tuas that is sustained by heavy industries. Several international companies like Sony, Hitachi, Compact and Epson can be found in the area. National industries like the Singapore Tin industries and the Tuas incineration plant are also located here. Moreover, the Tuas Biotechnology Park is one of the very few industrial parks in district 22. An alternative route between Singapore and Malaysia was built in 1998 and named Tuas 2nd Link to facilitate the heavy traffic flow along the Causeway which is Singapore’s first bridge to Malaysia. It comes as no surprise if a few incongruous Caucasians are found here as the Raffles Country Club is situated here.
