The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) announced on Thursday (19 Apr) that it is preparing the 17.4ha Kampong Bugis precinct for construction works to transform it into a green car-lite waterfront residential precinct.

“Kampong Bugis will be an open and inclusive neighbourhood with new community facilities, to foster more interaction among residents. The existing Kallang Riverside Park will be transformed into a lush and vibrant waterfront park. To provide a pedestrian-friendly environment and promote active mobility, the precinct will include a comprehensive network of pedestrian and cycling paths that will connect seamlessly to key public transport nodes (Lavender and Kallang MRT stations),” said URA.

The authorities also plan to install eco-friendly features such as a storm water treatment system and a precinct-wide pneumatic garbage conveyance system.

As such, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) yesterday gazetted the acquisition of two part-lots of private land there to facilitate the redevelopment.

At the same time, SLA called for a tender for remediation works to clean up the 3.14ha former Kallang Gasworks site so that it can be redeveloped for other uses. The remediation works are expected to start by November and complete by July 2022.

Last year, URA revealed that Kampong Bugis had been earmarked for future private residential use, with the precinct potentially yielding up to 4,000 homes.

The government also plans to appoint a master developer to oversee the planning and development of the entire precinct. TODAYonline reported that the development is targeted to be ready by 2030.
