The area was renamed Yishun as part of the Singaporean government’s campaign to discourage the use of Chinese dialects and promote the use of Chinese-Mandarin to foster cohesion among Chinese-Singaporeans. Like Sembawang, Yishun also consists of many HDB estates and condominiums.
