District 16 which comprises Bedok and Upper East Coast Road is a residential enclave that is marked by several high-rise apartments and HDB flats clamouring for the scenic ocean view; as well as private homes located away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Bedok is derived from the Malay word bedoh that refers to a type of slit drum made from a large hollowed log used to alert crowds of people to the mosque for prayers. In 1973, the Bedok New Town was developed and paved with newer roads like the Bedok Plain, Bedok highway and Bedok Heights. The New Upper Changi Road was built and completed in 1979 where massive transitions took place in the area. Today, district 16 is known for its distinctly fine mix of local and foreign residents, due to the agglomeration of F&B outlets that cater to a wide array of taste buds. These outlets range from those offering western cuisines like the Etna Italian Restaurant; to Asian delicacies like the Megumi Japanese Restaurant; and even the Middle Eastern dishes like the Deli Turk Turkish Cuisine. The easy access to sea sports like the East Coast Sports Club also appeals to a wide mix of foreign residents like Americans accustomed to life on the East Coast. This has spurred developers to implement several residential projects like the Urban Vista situated at the junction of New Upper Changi Road and Tanah Merah Kechil Link which provides 582 units priced from S$1350 psf. Other such residential projects also include eCO by Far East Organisation that adopts a green theme in its facilities, reflected in the rain garden, an eco-steam and community gardens where residents can grow their own vegetables.
