Two new Build-to-Order (BTO) housing projects along the waterfront districts of Punggol Point will feature designs that hark back to the town’s history as a fishing village and as one of Singapore’s first zoos.
Comprising 2,724 units, Punggol Point Crown and the second phase of Punggol Point Cove are slated for completion in 2024. The Housing and Development Board has said that the two projects will be launched for sale this month, reported Today Online.
Interested buyers can apply for two-room flexi to five-room flats once application opens for the two projects.
Taking inspiration from the old Ponggol Zoo, the 1,545-unit Punggol Point Crown celebrates the zoo’s colourful history with five thematic zones based on natural habitats – Forest Floor, Canopy Level Forest, Grassland, Tropical Forest and Shoreline.
Designs on signage, outdoor furniture and community living spaces will include animal and bird species once found in the zoo.
A special animal-themed heritage walk, featuring storyboards containing information on the zoo’s history, visitors and animals, can also be found at Punggol Point Crown.
Located near the Johor Straits between the late 1920s and the early 1940s, the zoo housed around 2,000 birds and 200 animals, including exotic animals from South Africa, Australia and the United States.
It was owned by William Lawrence Soma Basapa, an animal trader who moved the animals from his Serangoon Road family house to an 11ha site in Punggol to accommodate his expanding collection.
A key attraction during pre-war Singapore, the zoo was popular among residents and foreigners.
In a nod to Punggol’s beginnings as a fishing village and later on as a fishing port, Punggol Point Cove will boast design elements related to the sea such as waves and fishing nets.
Much like the kampungs of the past, each block will come with its own courtyards. Sky bridges at the 10th storey will also connect the blocks, offering residents more spaces to interact.
The estate will also be divided into three zones – namely Beach, Forest and Contemporary. It will also have thematic gardens, while the blocks’ heights will be staggered, affording vistas of Punggol Promenade and the sea.
