Under the current ruling, tenants who want to sublet requires the permission and approval from landlord. As there's no contract in existance between you and the tenant, technically nothing stands as I believe no TA was stamped, right? Because of this, unless there's SMS or email as evidence, you are unlikely to have your deposit back and they are unable to have any claims against you.

Since I do not know your entire situation, I can only advice till such point. Hope it's helpful to you.
