Many Singaporeans tend to dismiss Canberra as a ghost town, owing to its quiet surroundings and limited amenities. Not to be confused with the capital city of Australia, Canberra is an up and coming estate in the North Region of Singapore.

While Canberra previously lacked much amenities and services, construction of the new Canberra MRT station and many other exciting developments for nearby residents are underway. 

When will Canberra MRT station open to the public? 

In 2014, the government announced the addition of Canberra MRT station along the North-South Line (NSL). The new Canberra MRT station is slated to open for service on 2 November 2019. 

Situated between Sembawang and Yishun MRT stations, Canberra MRT station will be the latest addition to 27 other MRT stations along the NSL.

The MRT station is expected to benefit more than 17,000 households in the vicinity. Residents of EastLink I and II @ Canberra, and Eastwave @ Canberra in particular are expected to be within a 10-minute walk to the new Canberra MRT station.

Furthermore, the development of Canberra MRT station will reduce up to 10 minutes of travel time to the city centre. It will also connect commuters to the ends of Singapore such as Marina South Pier and Jurong East. 

As an extension of the project, a new 72-metre long rail crossover track too is being constructed near the station. The crossover tracks will connect the existing tracks leading to and from the station, and allow trains to cross over from one track to another when the need arises. 

What can I do near Canberra MRT station?

There are plenty of amenities waiting to be explored near Canberra MRT station. 

With a shopping mall, a sports community hub, and a revamped hot spring park due to open over the next year or so, exciting activities await this small neighbourhood. Here is what you can expect to see and do around the upcoming Canberra MRT station.

Canberra Plaza 

The three-storey Canberra Plaza is first on our list of exciting developments to keep an eye out for. Located just across the road from Canberra MRT station, Canberra Plaza will open to the public by the end of 2019. 

It comprises of three storeys spanning across a whopping 12,000 sqft. Canberra Plaza caters primarily to residents in the Canberra estate, so they can look forward to a wide variety of eateries and restaurants.  

Other tenants will include retail stores, enrichment centres, as well as clinics. Canberra Plaza will also comprise a water playground, lush precinct gardens, and communal spaces for increased interactions between all age groups.  

Canberra Plaza also offers a sheltered, elevated pedestrian footbridge that connects the shopping mall to nearby housing estates. This would improve access to the mall for residents come rain or shine.

Bukit Canberra

Apart from the upcoming Canberra Plaza, there are also plans to develop a sports and community hub called Bukit Canberra. Set to complete in 2020, Bukit Canberra will span 12 hectares, or about 20 football fields. 

Here are some facilities you can look forward to in Bukit Canberra: 

  • A fully-equipped ActiveSG gymnasium
  • An indoor sports hall with a 500-seat gallery for sports like basketball and badminton
  • Outdoor running trails passing through different landscapes within the hub
  • Rejuvenating six-lane outdoor and indoor swimming pools
  • A senior care centre including day care and rehabilitation services
  • A polyclinic offering a range of medical and healthcare services 

The sports hub will also integrate sports facilities with green communal spaces and horticultural amenities for a more lush and natural environment. 

For example, Bukit Canberra will include a fruit orchard featuring a variety of locally-grown fruit. It will also comprise of a food farm featuring different types of crops, and a community garden to initiate intimate interactions between people of all age groups.

Sembawang Hot Spring Park

Sembawang Hot Spring Park is located off the southwest corner of Canberra, along Gambas Avenue. Previously known as Sembawang Hot Spring, it is currently undergoing major renovations. It will be upgraded and renamed Sembawang Hot Spring Park.

Sembawang Hot Spring Park is slated to re-open on 30 November 2019. Once completed, a variety of vibrant flowers and lush, green shrubs will adorn the entrance of the hot spring park.

The current central pipes and taps, where the spring water runs from, will be replaced with a cascading pool. The cascading effect will help the water to cool down, and visitors can look forward to dip their feet in the cool waters. 

Sembawang Hot Spring Park will also feature enhanced toilets and a cafe offering light bites. Seasonal fruit trees like chiku and rambutan too will be planted in the vicinity. This will integrate the hot spring park with its surrounding greenery.

With so many exciting developments in store, Canberra residents will soon be able to enjoy a variety of entertainment and recreational activities. 

The new Canberra MRT station is another advantage of residing in Canberra. It will reduce travel time to the city centre significantly, and provide residents with seamless connectivity to the rest of Singapore.
