Introduction
Sembawang New Town in District 27 is spread over an area of 7.08 km/square in the northern-most portion of Singapore. This area has the largest mass of land within the Sembawang Group Representation Constituency. The earliest reference of this region is found in Franklin and Jackson's 1830 Map of Singapore, referring to the River Tambuwang.
Sembawang derives its name from Sembawang tree. Sem means second word and bawang means onion in Malay tongue. There is a Sembawang tree in the middle of carpark C1, close to the Sembawang Bus terminal that stands as a landmark in the area.
Early in twentieth century, Sembawang was the site of the Nee Soon Rubber estate. It was a major British naval base during the colonial times since the 1920s until Singapore got its independence. The Sembawang region comprised dockyards, workshops as well as ancillary residential and commercial areas. From 1968, the naval base was renovated and was used as Sembawang Shipyard. The Singapore government converted it into a commercial dockyard, which was later transformed into the Sembawang Corporation.
