
Macpherson
Introduction
Macpherson region in District 13 is a part of the Geylang Planning Area. The region is located in the eastern part of Singapore, with Paya Lebar in the east and Aljunied in the west. Earlier known as Jalan Klapa, the region was later named after Lieutenant Colonel Ronald MacPherson who became the First Captain Commandment of the Singapore Volunteer Rifle Corps. Central Area, the central business district (CBD) is Singapore lies at the west of Geylang, hence Macpherson is also influenced by the steady commercial progress of Central Area.
With few public housing estates and limited industrialization, Macpherson has great potential to become one of the hottest property sites in the Planning Area. The region is undergoing planned redevelopment which makes it an ideal residential place. This area is proposed to be connected to the Central MRT Line and the Macpherson MRT station is being constructed in the region. A progressive environment for trade and commercial activities also characterizes this region.
Places of Interest
There are many well known places of interests in and around the Macpherson region. The diverse nature of these places offers the visitors a wonderful experience about the history and culture of Singapore. Some of the most important places that every tourist visits are listed below:
- Kong Hiap Memorial Museum - Formerly known as Chian Pok Ee Temple, this museum houses the collections that belonged to the late Venerable Kong Hiap, a celebrated Buddhist monk in Southeast Asia and former president of the Singapore Buddhist Federation. Some of the rarest works of his generation are preserved in this museum.
- Hajjah Fatimah Mosque - One of the most popular mosques in the country, it was named after Hajjah Fatimah, an aristocratic Malay woman. The mosque was built in 1845 - 1846 and represents a combination of European and Islamic architecture. In 1973 the mosque was gazette as a national monument.
- Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple - It is one of the oldest temples in Singapore founded in 1855. Situated in Little India, this temple is spread over a large complex, and dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It draws large number of visitors during the annual Thaipusam festival. In 1978 it was gazetted as a national monument.
- Geylang Serai - Well known as a malay settlement, this area offers the visitors a chance to experience the Malay culture and lifestyle. Geylang is also known for its vibrant nightlife and a red-light area. It is the only area in the country where sex-trade has been legalized.
Shopping/Dining
With progressive business opportunities, facilities for shopping and dining in Macpherson are also becoming wider. There are some well known shopping centers in the region which together provides everything desired in modern day life. The popular shopping centers in the region are:
- Little India Shopping Center - This is a famous shopping center for all kinds of utility and consumer goods. These shops draw large number of shoppers for their affordable product ranges.
- Hotel Windsor - This hotel has shops at the ground floor. These shops primarily cater to people looking for luxury items.
- Kembangan Plaza - This is a small shopping complex where local people shop for various utility products.
Tanjong Katong Complex - this shopping complex is the address for several popular national and international stores. 7-Eleven shopping center is also located here.
Eminent Plaza - This shopping plaza has shops that sell various consumer goods, including electronic items.

The civic amenities are well maintained while the efficient administration of the district also cares for the well being of the residents of Macpherson. There are several educational institutes, hospitals, government offices and entertainment opportunities in the region. Being a part of the Geylang area, the region is awesome during the night. In addition a number of parks and clubs cater to the entertainment needs of people of different age groups. All kinds of facilities required for a comfortable living are available in Macpherson.
Transport Network
Macpherson is connected to the other parts of the district as also with different areas of Singapore by an efficient transportation network. The region is served by various modes of transport which includes railways, bus, taxi, and other private transportation.
The region is served by Aljunied MRT station, Paya Lebar MRT station and Potong Pasir MRT station. The proposed Macpherson MRT will also be functional soon.
Bus services that run across the region include the buses of Singapore bus service (SBS) and Singapore Mass rapid Transport (SMRT). Other bus services are also operational in the region. Bus stops are located at frequent distances.
