The Sail has gone downhill. Moving out

Posted by Jeoffrey Baratheon on May 6, 2012

Have stayed in The Sail for the past 2 years. I am not impressed, and I will move out. Let's face it - for a 'luxury' condo, The Sail has gone downhill over the past 2 years.

All in all, I say - not an apartment worth buying or even renting! Ridiculously overpriced - for what you get! Why?

- major pest infestations, lots of cockroaches in the building. Don't believe me? The Sail has restaurants on its basement, and is connected to Marina Bay Link. Food attracts cockroaches. On top of that, nearby construction activity attracts roaches too

- you used to need to swipe your card to get in the elevator lobby area. Now, it's just left open 24 hours a day - ridiculous. What kind of security is this?

- go into the shower area of any unit. This is a very common complain. You will smell sewage from the shower area, another sign of poor construction & design from the builder

- the lift was once floored in marble, with wooden and leather handrails. Now, the leather handrails have gone to the shod. The marble floors are entirely covered by carpet. Where's the luxury?

- Garbage chute: people often just leave their garbage lying around in the floor of the chute area (instead of actually dropping them through the chute). I suspect another design flaw: the chute is too small for building this size.

- Gym facility is often broken.

- Try not to stay below the gym, supposedly it's one of the most horrible place you can be in The Sail, because of the noise.

- Property management is useless. If you want to use a karaoke room, or any other facility, you have to deposit a cheque. This is OK, but why do you have to hold to the cheque for 3 days? Stupid as stupid is. They are not responsive at all.

Ripening fruit

Posted by Mr. Michael on Mar 30, 2012

Lot of previous reviews told us about different troubles and lacks of this condo, but people usually forget that new is always new. Marina Bay Sands hotel rooms was cost $350 at the start and now price is $600 and higher.
Obviously now it is one of the best places for city center living and will be attractive place according with current city development plans.

Make a good investment

Posted by chan on Dec 19, 2011

I have read all review comments (both positives and negatives).

My conclusion, besides the negative comments regading the mantainence, breakdown of interior fixtures etc. These problems can be fixed with the change of management agent or some reonvation.

The real potential of the Sails lies in it's location and the rapid development around the marina areas.
1. The new circle line marina station soon to be open in Jan 12. The usual quiet marina link mall will be more vibrant with more shoppers and visitor on the weekend which will lead to more retails shops there.

2. The nearby marina bay botanic garden due to be completed soon. Addtional place to bring your overseas visitors besides the marina sands IR.

3. More banks and FI are relocation to the marina financial center area. Rental to expat bankers is not a problem.

These factors make a good long term investment.

Overpriced!

Posted by anja van der vorst on Aug 16, 2011

I have lived in the Sail for two years. Although expensive I was very happy the first year or so. After that things began to deteriorate. Inside the apt bathroom and kitchen things were breaking, right in front of us they started building. Apart from a lot of noise (open windows impossible, talking at pool impossible) that not only took away our view, but also a lot of sunhours at the pool. The management is not competent. Elevators, escalators are constantly broken. It definitely is NOT value for money anymore!!! With events the whole town seems to want to go to the 44th floor, etc etc. Prices should go down and the management should improve and take better care of the building and facilities.

excellent for investment

An Iconic building and prestigious address in the heart of the city of financial district and IR ,nothing can compare to the Sail Condo. Lots of developments coming up in the near future. I am sure this is one of the best choice for investing a unit here. Will look for capital appreciation.

Perfect for me

Posted by WJ WJ on Feb 3, 2010

I was getting ready after reading these poor reviews, so maybe my expectations are low. But after living here, I find that it is perfect for me. The place is v expensive, but it has a virtual monopoly in location and location and location. Nothing beats being 5 mins from work. And going back during lunchtime.

I think it is for the single/couple bankers or expats whose bills are paid by allowances from their employers, rather than the man on the street - if i work in tuas, I can't see myself interested in living here at all.

Also, the prices vary almost 50-70% for a carpark vs bay view. The bay view which is v refreshing in the mornings and evenings.

The entire place is very breezy.

As for common areas, it is ok, and I furnish the place well, so I don't really care.

Big disappointment

Posted by M on Jan 17, 2010

I have lived at The Sail for 1 year and agree with all the negative reviews that have been posted.

It is very unfortunate that a building in such a great location and with such an amazing view (as long as you are not in a unit facing a building right at your nose; and there are lots of units like that) is so poorly built, maintained and managed. The Sail is definitely not worth the prices we have been seeing posted.

In 1 year here, they have never cleaned the outside windows. NOT once. In 1 year's time, i think we won't be able to see the fireworks anymore. The construction that goes one 24/7 means that we can't open the windows or we can't hear ourselves thinks; not to mention how dusty the place gets.

And unfortunately, the inconvenience doesn't only come from outside. yes, the furnishing and finishing inside is very poor and most things had to be fixed at one point or another, and most of it at the very beginning because the quality was so poor. and worse of all, the shower and the toilet use the same drain pipe. this means the shower regularly smells like the sewer. how's that to wake up to in the morning????

There is no cargo lift. this means that the passenger lifts are constently dirty or dammaged, but worse, you can't buy anything that measures more than 2.4 meters or so, so not 4-seater sofa and no tall bookshelf. Even if you move into one of the large units or top floor penthouses, you can't have any large furniture. we already had to return a sofa to the shop because it didn't fit in the lift. and if you leave for work during "rush hours", it takes 5 minutes to get down to the first floor.

The list of inconvenience goes on and on and on, like the fire alarm that goes off regularly for no reason. or the concierge? did someone mention concierge? The Sail doesn't understand the concept of concierge!

Over hyped

Posted by Kevin on Jan 2, 2010

The previous reviewer (Julie Lim) must be a real estate agent!!!

Having now lived here for 10 months, thank goodness I only took a 1 year rental agreement:
- Poor mobile phone coverage
- Regular problems with light fittings
- Noise from the lift shaft if your unit is beside the lifts
- 24/7 piling work from the IR for the last 6 months
- Impossible to sit beside the pool and have a conversation
- Only 2 tennis courts and small gym for 1100 units

Great location, great view if you are facing the bay.....apart from that, very average and way over-hyped.

The Sail rocks !!!

Posted by Julie Lim on Dec 25, 2009

There's nothing quite like The Sail, and let no one tell you otherwise. I have a larger unit, and my 3 kids ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I save so much time commuting (which i now spend with family) that it is going to taking a LOT to make me move from the city.

How many condos have 2 tennis courts in the city, a rock climbing wall, spa for men & women ? It has 3 pools, a hot pool & an exercise pool ... what's not to love about it ?

Sure, early days of post-TOP came with some inconveniences but all defects were fixed for my unit & my friends ... and it has only gotten better with each passing day. And the IR plus waterfront is taking spectacular shape ... anyone talking down The Sail is hoping YOU will not look to buy it so THEY can get it hopefully cheaper. And it is not looking to get cheaper ... just wait & see. So, if you are investing, act to get what you can afford sooner rather than later ... it will be beyond reach once everything around the Marina Bay is completed.

Happy Holidays to all !

Think Twice

Posted by SD on Dec 13, 2009

Of course not for everyone, but if you used to live with high standards, the Sail is definitely not suitable for this.

Most of the units' interior quality extremely bad. In one year I called handyman 12 times. Electricity and the water connections always had problems. And the windows make horrible noise when the weather is windy.

During the special occasions like National Day, New year, F1, forget to use the facilities or sky terraces as a resident because it will be already reserved from someone else in morning.

With a new restaurant the main lobby has started to smell kebab.

Elevators does not have good air con and always some of them are under maintenance. Garbage disposals are always dirty.

Constructions near the area keep working 24/7 and very noisy. It doesn't look like it will end very soon. I could only use the facilities 2 times on weekend. And it is hard to keep your mind away working, while you are sitting 5 meters away from an office building.

Security is not good. First of all, the staff has communication problem. Second they are not very helpful, especially the management (too many procedures). Third, security cameras are not for the residents' safety, so you should open your eyes and be careful while you are hanging around. And definitely not suitable for the families with children.

Weekdays are not problem, but on weekends its like a dead town. The new shops under the Sail are very expensive than they have to be.

Good part is transport and easy to walk many places, but isn't it okay almost everywhere in Singapore?

Too much hype, not enough delivery

Posted by D W on Nov 12, 2009

Handy location if you work in the CBD, 44th floor is great, but otherwise the building is overrated.

If you have to go to the MRT in the morning rush, or come home in the evening, fighting against the thousands of people coming from the other direction gets very frustrating, very fast.

Local amenities are very good during the week, on the weekend (especially Sunday) not much is open.

Facilities are decent, but not spectacular.

Staff and the management company are horrendous. Most can barely understand or speak english. In Oct 09 the power went out to all of tower one for 4 hours, nobody on the service desk could explain what went wrong, or understand anyones questions, they just kept hanging up on people.

If you don't complete 8 pieces of paper the management company will refuse to do anything.

The sail is infamous for its poor quality interior finish, and its an accurate rumour. Cheap and "plasticy" best describe the kitchens and bathrooms.

Concierge is not a concierge, but rather someone who gives directions. They do not offer the usual services (eg. holding packages, letting people into your apartment etc).

As of Nov 09 24/7 building works create noise and dust relentlessly, although allegedly this will be finished within the next 6-12 months.

On par with a mid-range 3 star hotel, certainly not worth the hype, better to wait for the new apartment buildings that are opening nearby.

Fantastic Location & View

Posted by Shirley Tan on Nov 21, 2008

Situated right in the heart of CBD, with panoramic views of the Marina Bay, sea or Central Linear Park (when it's completed in a few years), this is undoubtedly THE residence that expatriates who are working in the CBD would love to live in. Transport links is fantastic; with MRT interchange station @ Raffles Place (just 5 mins walk away, & sheltered walkway throughout!). Banking services is plentiful & 24-hr eateries @ Lau Pa Sat just across the street.

When the IR opens in 2009, there will be more entertainment & other amenities available.

Fantastic Location

Posted by TT on Nov 20, 2008

Located at the heart of an exciting area, with the convenience of most transport links and business district. Ideal for those working in the CBD !!!

Views will be fantastic, upon the completion of all developments around the area. However, at the moment, it is quite unsightly with all the constructions going on.

I wouldn't say this is a luxury development for most units (except for the penthouses), considering the average interior fittings and the close office buildings nearby. Too many units in the development, making one feels like a office rather than a luxury living environment.

Suitable only for those working in CBD, don't mind the lack of privacy with all those offices nearby and perhaps thousands of people living in the same development.

Fantastic Location. Nice View. Office like living.

Its located is a perfect location next to the Marina Bay IR. Got a beuatiful facing either the esplanade or the sea view to Indonesia. Ideal for many gamblers and family. Rather paying so much for 5 star hotels then to be a stone throw away rom the IR..
