Recognised as the first and only sustainable light art festival in Asia, the iLight Marina Bay 2012 was attended by a total of 565,000 local and international visitors over three weeks.

Compared to its inaugural edition in 2010, 30 percent more visitors gathered at this year’s festival. Its sustainability message was also successful, as 47 properties islandwide supported the Switch Off, Turn Up energy efficiency campaign.

iLight Marina Bay 2912, which was organised by the URA and supported by Smart Light, decorated Singapore’s waterfront with 31 spectacular and sustainable light art installations around the bay.

The festival also featured outdoor activities organised by various community partners, such as a movie screening by the People’s Association (PA).

“iLight Marina Bay 2012 aimed to encourage the community to experience the dynamic Marina Bay waterfront in a different light. We would like to thank our sponsors, the artists, programme partners and student volunteers from Temasek Polytechnic for making this meaningful event possible,” said Mark Goh, Deputy Director, Place Management Department at URA.

Following the energy efficiency theme, artists, suppliers and event partners to the event were encouraged to observe sustainable practices.

Furthermore, the 47 properties that participated in the Switch Off, Turn Up campaign showed commitment to switch off non-essential lights and turn up air-conditioning temperatures during the period.

Additionally, iLight Marina Bay 2012 also took part in Earth Hour 2012 on 31 March, as all 31 featured artworks were switched off from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

Mary-Anne Kyriakou, Festival Director of i Light Marina Bay 2012, noted that the event “achieved significant energy savings, bolstering the sustainability efforts that were made throughout the festival.”
