Following plans to transform their void deck into a day-care centre for the elderly, some residents in Woodlands have expressed their disapproval of the change, said a Straits Times report.
According to the residents, the plan would deprive them of a venue to hold wakes and weddings, among other reasons.
However, large void decks, a common feature in HDB estates, have already been removed in areas like Sengkang and Punggol. In addition, new housing blocks in older housing estates like Buona Vista, Ang Mo Kio and Kallang no longer maintain such common spaces.
Instead, smaller void decks were built in Punggol, while new Ang Mo Kio housing blocks now have precinct pavilions replacing the spacious void decks.
