To cater to parking needs, the HDB will construct 1,600 parking spaces by next year and will also study the use of high-rise mechanised parking systems for older HDB units, said a report by The Business Times.
The new parking spaces will supplement 3,400 existing lots that were constructed over the last two years and will cost around S$66 million in total.
In addition, HBD has been requested to study the viability of implementing mechanised parking systems, as well as to assess the various technologies available, said Khaw Boon Wan, the National Development Minister.
Khaw noted that Ang Mong Seng, a former Member of the Parliament, recommended such systems, citing land constraints, reliability and lower costs, following his study of mechanised parking systems.
Parking lot shortage is more evident in older HDB estates, which were built under old parking lot provision standards.
HDB estates with four room flats had 560 car park lots planned per 1,000 flats. The current standard for such precincts is 710 car park lots per 1,000 flats.
“With the new norms, new HDB flats will come with adequate car parks. The problem is in the older HDB estates. Of the 1,800 HDB car parks island-wide, about 220 of them face some localised shortages,” Khaw said.
To improve the situation, the report noted that HDB will eliminate the night parking scheme for non-residents, apply electronic pricing systems (ERP) to increase the turnover of short-term parking demand and set aside more reserved lots for residents.
