Residents of four blocks of flats at East Coast Road have been offered new units as part of the HDB’s Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS).
However, The Straits Times reported that many residents are unhappy, stating that the replacement flats in Chai Chee were not an equivalent substitute, in terms of location.
The report noted that at least 35 people in the affected blocks plan to petition the HDB for higher compensation and want to be given priority for new flats at developments across the country.
Meanwhile, the HDB said it is not easy to find replacement sites, adding that it faces constraints due to land limitations.
Last month, the HDB announced plans to redevelop the 48-year-old five-storey blocks, which are home to 82 households, under its SERS programme. The scheme involves selected older buildings being redeveloped to maximise land use.
Affected residents have been given market-value compensation and priority when acquiring new flats at the replacement project.
