Shrinking public flat sizes have been attributed to the need to adapt to changing household sizes and maximise Singapore’s limited land, according to the Housing Development Board (HDB).
In a report by The Straits Times, the HDB said these needs have made it necessary for all public flat sizes to decrease progressively over the years. It noted that the HDB’s architects have compensated for this by improving the use of internal space with better flat layouts.
It also said that the HDB regularly reviews flat sizes, considering factors like lifestyle habits and changes in demographic trends.
The HDB’s statement comes after a debate erupted over earlier remarks made by its CEO, Cheong Koon Hean, that smaller public flats do not mean a lower quality of living.
