Residents of three rental blocks along Merpati Road have been enjoying new amenities under the Rental Flat Upgrading Programme since March 2010, which took almost two years and cost $7.4 million.

The completion ceremony of Geylang Serai Town Day 2010 was officiated by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who is also a Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC.

Residents in the 360 rental flats account for around five percent of the population in the constituency of Geylang Serai. The majority - about 60 percent reside in private estates.

A carnival was also conducted in order to integrate all the residents.

According to Dr. Fatimah Lateef, the hosting MP of the ceremony, residents from rental blocks, HDB blocks as well as from private estates organized the 25 booths together.

The ceremony also showcased water catchment areas being integrated into Singapore's living spaces.
