To mark the 50th Anniversary of HDB this year, the challenges facing Singapore’s public housing have been documented in a special two-part series “My Place, My Home.”

Out of 10 Singaporeans, eight reside in HDB flats, and with the changing needs and aspirations, the face of public housing has transformed over the past 50 years.

Middle-aged HDB estates are upgraded, while new flats with more modern finishes are being constructed.

Yuen Ho Wah, who has resided in the Dawson area for the last 50 years, is excited about the changes planned for the estate.

“They are building more flats and they are going to enhance this area with parks, open spaces. In a way it will benefit us too,” said Yuen, a HDB resident.

However, there are challenges to be tackled, like maintaining their value, keeping flats affordable and catering to the needs of the elderly.

With the sharing of common spaces, public housing provides Singaporeans with a shared experience.

National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan said: “The HDB experience is… a common experience for many Singaporeans. And this is what builds a certain bond among us.”

As Singapore opens its doors to new immigrants, the challenge ahead for HDB is to integrate them into the heartlands of the country.
