Studio apartments built by HDB for the elderly have proven to be a big hit.

Over 3,000 studio units have been released since the scheme was introduced in 1998, of which around 1,200 have been completed so far.

More than half of the remaining number will be ready over the next two to three years.

According to a HDB spokesperson, take-up rates have been “close to 100 percent”.

These flats are specifically designed for the elderly, which come with grab bars, kitchen cabinets complete with cooker hoods and gas stoves, lever taps, non-slip tiles and an alarm system.

They are usually situated near food centres, markets and transport nodes, enabling the elderly to be independent for as long as possible.

Most studio apartments are also located near community facilities, like the activity centres for senior citizens.

These units are more affordable, with its shorter 30-year lease period.

In December 2009, 105 studio units were launched for sale at an upcoming, unique project in Dawson estate, which permits parents and their married children to purchase studio units paired with four- or five-room flats.

“These flats are designed as two separate units and have connecting doors,” said the HDB spokesman.

“They allow families to stay close yet maintain their privacy,” he added.

They allow families to stay close yet maintain their privacy---being close with your family doesnt mean u become dependent to them... that's a primitive viewpoint ms. Jill Sze Lian...

one fallback is the fact that some elderly live and take care of themselves alone...

yup... they would even reside at their parent's flat - a scenario viewed by other countries as total dependence on ones parent.

good to know that Singapore still care for their elderly, unlike in some western countries, where the oldies are treated so badly. either they develop feeling of integrity or despair, it all depends on how they are taken cared for at this age
