Singapore's Housing and Development Board (HDB) still has a role to play even now that the entire population has already been housed, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. HDB is still responsible for fostering social integration and providing good public housing.

Speaking at its 50th anniversary, PM Lee unveiled that the board will build its one millionth flat this year to celebrate its half a century of achievements.

According to Mr. Lee, HDB is a central part of the Story of Singapore. For over 50 years, it has housed a growing population and played an integral part in nation-building.

“Two generations of Singaporeans have grown up in HDB flats. Public housing helped to mould our unique national identity and collective experience as Singaporeans. It created and shaped our communities and provided the foundation for our social stability and economic growth,” said Mr. Lee.

However, Mr. Lee noted that Singaporeans’ aspirations have risen sharply and the environment has changed.

“Finding a roof over our heads is no longer the pressing requirement. The HDB flat is not just a shelter but also a key investment asset. People have many considerations in choosing their flats - they want the right flat, in the right locality, at the right time and at the right price,” he added.

“Such high expectations are understandable since buying a flat is a major commitment for a young couple setting up a home together.”

Even though it could not accommodate every homebuyer’s expectation and preference, HDB remains committed to providing high quality housing.
