Civil servant Melvyn Tan tells Debbie Yong how adding a bar and entertainment room to his home makes it a fun space for having guests over.

Mr Melvyn Tan, 30

  • Civil servant

  • Lives in a 145 sq m HDB executive apartment in Pasir Ris

  • Lives with his wife, civil servant Rachel Yau, 28.

    I love my home because...

It is spacious and allows us to entertain our family and friends.

    My decor theme is...

    Modern contemporary.

We wanted something which wasn't too extreme, such as minimalism, yet we wanted a style that reflected our modern lifestyle.

    My favourite corner is...

The bar, because it allows us to entertain family and friends during parties.

    I'm most proud of...

My entertainment room because we've always been movie buffs and the room allows us to spend quality couple time during weekends and entertain friends over a round of Nintendo Wii.

    Will I sell it?

Not in the near future unless someone comes and offers me a price that I can't refuse.

    MONEY MATTERS

    Cost of home: $376,000

    Cost of furnishings: $30,000

    Cost of renovations: $58,000

    Approximate value now: $470,000
