LOCALLY listed Stamford Land Corporation (SLC) has appointed former Australian deputy prime minister and transport minister Mark Vaile (right) as an independent director.

Mr Vaile, who lives in Sydney, joined the Singapore company's board yesterday. Among other directorships, Mr Vaile, 52, also also sits on the board of Virgin Blue. He was in the property business prior to going into politics in 1993.

SLC chairman C K Ow said: 'The group has been heavily invested in Australia and New Zealand for the past 15 years through the ownership and management of hotels. We are also involved in the development of commercial property and luxury apartments.

'We are delighted to have Mr Vaile on our board and believe that given his wealth of experience in Australian property prior to joining the federal government, he will be able to contribute positively to the group's businesses.'

Before he became Australia's deputy prime minister, Mr Vaile was trade minister, and then transport minister. As transport minister, he often found himself in the middle of the battle between Singapore Airlines and Qantas, as the former sought permission to operate the trans-Pacific route to the US from Australia, which the Australian carrier strongly opposed.
