I REFER to the Housing Board's reply last Tuesday, "HDB shop corridor area cannot be sublet".
HDB estates have two types of boxes. The red box in front of the HDB shop is the Outdoor Display Area or ODA, rented out by town councils at very low rents. The ODAs are usually cluttered with goods and sport unsightly canvas blinds.
The other box is the Outdoor Refreshment Area or ORA, rented out by the HDB to the eating house operators at higher rates. The ORAs have proper shelters and rain blinds. They are usually neat and orderly.
I cannot understand why two separate authorities manage ORAs and ODAs. I suggest that HDB takes over control of the ODAs for consistency as both shops and eating houses are commercial operators. That is not to say the town councils have not done a good job, but HDB has more power.
