FOUR home-grown companies have been honoured at an annual awards ceremony that singles out the best logistics operators in the Asia-Pacific region.
PSA International was yesterday named the top container terminal operator, while Northport (Malaysia) was the best multi-purpose terminal operator. The award for best air cargo terminal operator went to Singapore Airport Terminal Services (Sats), while Keppel Distripark clinched the gong for logistics park of the year.
Mr Yacoob Piperdi, senior vice-president of cargo services at Sats, attributed his firm's success to strategies rolled out over the past year. These included achieving operational excellence, enhancing customer satisfaction by leveraging on existing capabilities, offering new products and seeking new areas of growth, he said.
'These enabled us to achieve new heights in our cargo-handling services, but much of this would not have been possible without the support of our staff and customers, especially over a difficult year where freight movements have taken a dip,' he said.
Altogether, 37 prizes - called the Frost and Sullivan Asia Pacific Transportation and Logistics Awards - were handed out at the Hotel InterContinental.
Mr R. Gopal, director of transportation and logistics practice in the Asia-Pacific for Frost and Sullivan, told the gathering about the logistic industry's changing needs.
'Logistics end-users are becoming more demanding and expect more efficient, just-in-time logistics operations to reduce inventory cost,' he said.
Logistics firms that manage to improve transportation planning and integrate their supply chains will be sought out by end-users in the region, he added.
Labelling Singapore as an established
logistics market, he said the country presents opportunities for service parts
management, reverse logistics and just-in-time operations.
