I REFER to last Tuesday's Forum Online letter by Dr Tan Chek Wee, 'Dim lighting for one-room rental flats puts seniors at risk'.
We agree that suitable lighting should be provided in all HDB blocks. Under our current rental flat upgrading programme, we replace common corridor lighting with 'cool-white' energy-saving T5 light tubes. In rental blocks such as Block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah that were upgraded earlier, the corridors were fitted with 'warm-white' T8 fluorescent tubes. These appear slightly yellowish compared to the 'cool-white' lights. However, they are not the yellow incandescent lights mentioned by Dr Tan.
Block 106 is currently undergoing repair and redecoration works carried out by the town council. The works include replacing the corridor lights with 'cool-white' tubes. Meanwhile, the town council will consider switching on more lights during the day.
We thank Dr Tan for his feedback.
