KEPPEL LAND, which develops both residential and commercial projects, has won five Building and Construction Authority Green Mark for Buildings awards this year.

It won the Gold Plus award for phase two of the Marina Bay Financial Centre commercial development, and Golds for Marina Bay Suites, One Raffles Quay, Sixth Avenue Residences and The Promont. All in, Keppel Land has 12 Green Mark awards under its belt.

Since clinching its first Green Mark Gold award in 2006 for The Tresor, a residential project, Keppel Land is fulfilling its commitment to going green, with a benchmark of achieving a minimum of Green Mark Gold certification for all new projects - be they local or overseas.

To date, the group has won a Green Mark award every year, with the Marina Bay Residences winning Gold in 2007, and reaping five awards last year for its properties.

This includes Ocean Financial Centre, the first office development in Singapore's Central Business District to achieve a Platinum Green Mark award, and The Estella, the first property in Vietnam to be granted the Green Mark Gold award.

Other awards last year were for phase one of the Marina Bay Financial Centre commercial development, Madison Residences, and Reflections at Keppel Bay, which took home the Gold.

Keppel Land, the property arm of Keppel Group, is diversified in Asia, with a focus on Singapore, China, Vietnam, India and Indonesia.

'Going green is not new to us,' said a Keppel Land spokesman. 'As early as the 1970s, our properties have distinguished themselves with lush greenery and landscaping, and with green features such as roof gardens and water recycling systems.'

An example would be the former Ocean Building, one of Singapore's first skyscrapers.

Green buildings have always been attractive to Keppel Land as the group believes in striking a balance between economic objectives and environmental viability.

'We are committed to creating optimal live- work-play environments for our homeowners and tenants, and one means is through incorporating environmentally friendly and energy-saving features in our developments,' said the spokesman.

Furthermore, as there are benefits for tenants and homeowners, going green is also economically feasible.

'Eco-features can bring about further savings in energy and water consumption over the long term,' said the spokesman, citing green initiatives such as solar roof panels and special paint.

'Other tangible benefits include better indoor air quality and environment, which contribute to improved employee productivity and wellness,' the spokesman added.

By focusing on green buildings, Keppel Land is also reaching out to international tenants, as it has noted that global businesses are 'choosing to be housed in green developments to enhance their reputation and demonstrate corporate social responsibility with concern for the environment'.

But while Keppel Land is encouraged by the recognition from the awards, it is placing the needs of its tenants and homeowners firmly in prime position.

Its commitment to the environment is also a key factor driving it to provide innovative green design and technology in its developments, according to the spokesman.
