OVER 200 residents had to be evacuated after a fire broke out in a unit of a condominium off Balestier Road yesterday.

The fire, which started at about 6.20pm, originated in the bedroom of an eighth-floor flat in Ava Tower.

Firefighters set up water jets on the floor of the burning unit. It took about 10 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

Both the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and police officers were on hand to evacuate the condominium's residents. SCDF said the cause of the blaze is being investigated.

No one was hurt in the fire, but it did cause anxiety for resident Nancy Lee, 41.

Ms Lee, who lives on the 19th floor, could not find her son Donovan, nine, while trying to get to the ground floor.

The crying mother tried to go back up to find him but was held back by a group of people. Mother and son were eventually reunited.
