Last Friday, a letter stated that “Lifts at every floor a necessity, not luxury”. Mr. Teng Nee Peng gave an acceptable point, claiming that although the HDB did not make a major upgrade, it can likely fail to comprise lifts that stop at each floor.

According to him, he has been staying at Potong Pasirfor for 12 years since he moved to the place. In November, the council of the town set up notices that the lifts at each block will be replaced. As a result, this has caused a great deal of confusion with regards to whether these lifts will make a stop at each floor.

In the same month, a lift in nearly all the blocks was ceased to operate and the replacement programme started. Residents there had to bear the inconvenience of just one functional lift in every block. Three months after, several new lifts were all made operational, but they still had a problem – it did not stop at each floor.

A question was raised about how much more money and time would it have cost in order to have these lifts stop at each floor, particularly in blocks with several corridors linking to all units in the structure.

When the council members of the town were asked, they said that they desire to install functional lifts that stop at every floor, but they failed to seek approval from the HDB.

Authorities are being asked to clarify why they have undertaken such programme, when expenses could have been put aside by replacing these lifts and making them stop at each floor, and why the programme was unapproved when so much time, inconvenience, and money could have been conserved to complete all the works at once.
