There are many ways to which you can decorate your bathroom be it big or small. Either way there should be a consistent theme that follows the general style of your home if not your bathroom may seem to be out of place. Also, set a concept that you want to create in your bathroom. Would you want it to be bright and fun, classy and elegant or rustic and antique? With that in mind it will help build a basic foundation on the overall look that you're going for in your bathroom and help you easily pick up the right bathroom accessories that matches your concept.
The most common look homeowners usually choose is the classy look. Classy bathroom uses muted colors, sometimes with a subtle floral tone. This coordinated style is associated with upscale hotels that homeowners would love to replicate into their bathrooms. Consider tasteful and clean decorations as well as fixtures. You can start off with the color of your shower curtains or the color of your walls. Choose beige, off white or white if your bathroom is small. Do not choose a darker color shade because it will make your bathroom space "shrink". The main aim for a smaller bathroom is to make sure that it is well lit to give an illusion of space. Bigger bathrooms however should use color coordinated fixtures and decorations especially when bolder colors are used.

While pondering on how to choose bathroom and bathtub accessories, make sure that you have enough space for them so that your bathroom does not look crowded or cluttered. The usual accessories are mirrors, wastebaskets, tissue holders, soap dishes, shampoo holders and towel holders. Porcelain, ceramic, glass and stainless steel are suited for upscale bathrooms. Pieces in colors can yield interesting tasteful arrangements.
For bigger bathrooms you can find vanity sink and bath cabinets. Overdoing your bathroom accessories may compromise the organized look you're going for. Choose items that are practical and functional. For example, placing fresh hand towels in glass jars on your sink instead of hanging them on your racks not only keeps it clean but saves your space. Attach a metal rack above your bathtub to store your towels that also helps to make sure that they are within reach. Install shelves that are all the way to the ceiling (especially for smaller bathrooms) to give an illusion of height and also provide more storage space.
Your towels are also great decorating element. Pick a color that gives a contrast to the colors of your walls, or one that matches the color of your shower curtains. The main idea is to make sure that everything in your bathroom are color coordinated and decorative items are accentuated with contrasting colors and style. Consider plants to create a soft atmosphere or place a rug (washable) for added warmth. Wall chandeliers or sconces give a romantic atmosphere to your bathroom. Consider items that make scents such as potpourri and candles, which should be changed occasionally. You don't want to have your bathroom reek of odors. Showering may not be as pleasant.
Whatever your style is, whatever the color you choose, decorating your water sanctuary is as important as keeping your hygiene at its optimum. In the long run, there is never a reason for your day to go wrong.
