Remodelling Your Kitchen
Your kitchen is the life source of your home. Whether your meals are cooked for you or by you, chances are, you spend most of your time in the kitchen. This is where we refuel and this is where we bond with the members of our household. Having it spic, span and livable is more than just a luxury -- it is a necessity.
If you feel like your kitchen is looking more than just a little tired, it might be time to explore remodeling. Remodeling feels like such a daunting word, and in a way, it is. Images of tearing down old spaces to make way for new ones seem like a feat that only the professional "do-it-yourself" folks on TV can handle. Don't fret, remodeling need not be such a pain in the patella.
Before getting your carpentry tools ready for battle, we must first sit down to settle a few items:

1. Your Reason for Remodeling your Kitchen
Is the space in your kitchen too cramped for you? Are your walls not attune to the rest of your home's aesthetic? Is your family growing? Have you recently learnt a new culinary art that would require you to stock up on sophisticated kitchen utensils? Do you want to install more skylights for a brighter space? Identify what your needs are before bringing out the screwdriver.
If space is what you need, you may want to take into consideration the unnecessary items in your kitchen. Are there cabinets that only serve to occupy space? Do away with them. If you are upping your kitchen skills and need more counter space, consider the many ways to extend it. This takes us to the next guideline.
2. Settle on a Design Plan
Remodeling is not like drawing. Undoing a mistake is not as easy as rubbing your space with an eraser - it's permanent. So, before you settle on a design, revisit the rest of your home. Will the design mesh well with the apparent aesthetic? If you're starting with your kitchen, will the new design flow well with the other parts of your home?
If you are first to admit that you lack the design gene, seek first the help of your contractor. Remodeling means accurate measurements of your entire kitchen from ceiling to floor . Understand the leeway and space considerations needed to achieve the desired floor plan.
3. Do-It-Yourself or Do-It-For-You?
This cannot be stressed enough: If you want to do it yourself, do not overestimate your capabilities. If you are unsure about getting gritty and doing all the dirty work, abandon suit. Not only will it be a waste of your time, if you are completely unfamiliar with the ways of carpentry and building, it will be a tremendous waste of money as well.
Depending on the size and scale of your needs, remodeling can cost anywhere between SGD 1,500 to SGD 4,000 if you get somebody to do it for you. Doing it yourself would slash the cost by three quarters, and it can cost even less if you employ a little resourcefulness. If you use old items from your old kitchen that can be remodified into something ‘new', you can cut your budget in half.
Remember that in any kind of remodeling or redesign project, it is important to do your homework first. Revisit blueprints or floor plans of your current kitchen. Know where your electrical outlets are. If you have children in the home, spend time identifying ways on how to baby-proof your kitchen. Identify the key points for consideration before you do a Ty Pennington.
You would want your kitchen to be the center of your home's harmony and not the source of unnecessary tension. Just try to fit a family of ten with a space built for four or a homeowner with a bright red kitchen that's a pain in the eyes. So, plan your moves carefully. Your kitchen is your home. You should only want the best.
