The Washing Machine: How to Choose the Best Model for Your Home
![]() |
| Front-load Washing Machine |
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out how to buy a washing machine. For one thing, the abundance of models and features will not make it hard for you to find one that strikes your fancy. However, before picking out your washer, you need first to survey how much laundry is washed at home per week.
A typical person chalks up to about 2-3 kilos of clothes per week which means a typical four-person household would have about 12 kilos of clothes to wash every week. 12 kilos would fit any standard front-loading washing machine. If your home requires more, high-volume models are also available.
Locate first the area where your machine will be installed upon purchase. Washing machines are bulky which means even a marginal difference in space would result in your having to place it somewhere you don't want to. So, make sure to measure your space properly.
Here are a few considerations before purchasing a washer:
1) Look for models that are easy to use
Any machine with multiple knobs, bells and whistles will take up too much time to operate. You need a machine that doesn't require too many brain cells to use. Nowadays, most brands have two or three knob types that identify what kind of load and wash you will need. Just a couple of turns and you can walk away confident that you will come back to a load of freshly washed clothes in a bit.
Should your budget permit, you can also consider touch-pad types that feel like your typical microwave. Punch in your needs, hit YES and then let the machine do your work for you.
Also remember to choose a model that has a self cleaning capability. Reaching the far depths of your washing machine to clean it out would require more effort than choosing a model that doesn't require you to stress yourself out.
2) Examine the machine
It is best to opt for top surfaces with porcelain coating, as these tend to be sturdier. For the drum, look for stainless steel or plastic ones versus painted ones that can get chipped or scratched.
3) Consider the water and power consumption
As we've stressed many times before, power consumption should be one of your major considerations. Look for the Energy Star which indicates the energy-efficiency of your machine. You can also seek the help of your dealer in indentifying which models are eco-friendly.
If you want to save on water, opt for frontloading models tan top-loading models. Front-loading models require less water than the top-loading ones.
4) Make a note of the features
Some machines are generally louder than others, depending on the brand and load it can handle. If it is located in an area of your home that can contain the noise, then this should not be such a big problem. If your washing machine is located near your bedrooms, look for quieter models.
Look for extras such as bleach, detergent-and fabric softener-dispensers as well. These will be easier for you in the long run. A hand-wash cycle is a must as well, if you have a lot of delicate fabrics.
5) Warranty and Repair
Check if the brand you're purchasing has a nearby repair or customer service center. Loading your bulky washer into your car for a repair check far away is not something you want to do. Be extremely sure that you get a good warranty to prevent any repair-related problems.
