Spring Cleaning

It is not an appealing sight to see piles of wreckage hurled across the living room floors or sniffing a foul odor that exudes from the kitchen sink filled with dirty dishes Spring cleaning is vital not only does it prevent hoarding but also encourages the breeding of moulds and bacteria. If an important festival is around the corner or you feel like your home needs a little de-clutter, here is a complete spring cleaning checklist for you to follow- the eco-friendly way:

1. Purge or sell

This will help to de-clutter your already existing mess and even create more space in your room. This includes your unwanted clothes, knick-knacks, books, magazines and even your furniture. When de-cluttering, separate your garbage bags into ‘Sell' and ‘Throw'. You can have your sellable items sold in flea markets or even hold your very own garage sale.

2. Dust walls

The corner of your walls are prone to have build ups of cobwebs. Dust these corners off.  Dusts your air vents, door knobs and switch plates. Use a damp cloth to wipe off the dust from your wall art.

3. Dust knick-knacks and decorative items.

You can use a feather duster to dust your items or a damp cloth to wipe off dust from your compact disc covers. Take all your books out and dust the inside of your bookshelves and even your books. Don't forget your lamps too!

4. Dust down dressers, chests and other furniture.

Hempseed oil, olive oil and even vegetable oil are great non-toxic, pure and safe finishing oils that provide clear coating as well as protecting wood grains and painted surfaces. You can use them for kids wooden toys as well.

Use an appropriate solution for leather surfaces such as your couches and seats. Wear gloves if you must to protect your skin.

5. Clean your windows and draperies

A simple mixture of half water and half lemon juice in a spray bottle provides you with an effective cleaning agent that is eco-friendly. Your room will smell great with the crisp scent of lemon. You can use this for your windows, glass and ceramics. An added mix of baking soda will help remove tougher spots and stains.

Take down your curtains and wash them accordingly. Use eco-friendly bar soaps as an alternative to washing detergents when washing your draperies and even your laundry. Use the sun to dry your clothes and if you need to use the dryer, pop in a ball of aluminum foil to help reduce static cling.

6. Turn your bed and change your bed sheets.

Vacuum and flip over your mattress to provide even wear. Slip on new bed sheets, pillow covers and even blankets and comforters. Dig underneath your bed and make sure you did not miss anything.

7. Clean the floors.

Finally, do a final sweep and mop your floors. Use a vacuum for your carpets or have them professionally cleaned.

Listening to music or chatting with a friend over the phone through the speaker would help make spring cleaning less laborious and boring. Start off in the morning and when you are done you have the rest of the afternoon to rest or head out with your friends. But if all that cleaning seems too tiresome for you, hire professional cleaners who can do the job efficiently. There are housekeeping services available for you to choose from but only if you can afford to do so.
