Preparing Your Furniture for the Move

Often, one of the most stressful things about relocating is to find your furniture scratched or damaged after the move. Which is why properly preparing the furniture for the move is important, to help reduce the risk of damaged furniture.

Moving to a new house or location can be extremely stressful as there are a lot of personal items which must be transferred, not to mention other important issues that need to be settled prior to the move. What else could be more nerve-racking upon reaching the new place, with all the furniture taken inside the house, only to discover that your dresser was scratched or the corner of your table was splintered.

Preparing

Preparing the furniture for the move is quite essential to prevent damage and dents during the transportation down. Proper packing and wrapping can be practiced both by DIY movers and professional moving companies to ensure that the furniture is in good condition upon departure and arrival to its destination. Before moving, it is useful to prepare a list of the things to be transported to the new house. By doing so you will identify which materials must be bought and prepared to effectively pack the said objects and the approximate time in packing may as well be determined. Some of the usual items that are likely used in wrapping these items are bubble wrap, plastic stretch wrap, corrugated cardboard sheets, seal-able plastic bags, furniture blankets, sofa and mattress covers, packing tape and old blankets.

Prior to packing, it is advisable to clean and dust the furniture. When all materials necessary for packing are obtained, remove any items inside the dressers and cabinets then properly disassemble any piece of the furniture that may be taken apart. This allows for easy transportation of the furniture and prevention of the furniture colliding with each other. The disassembled parts should be suitably wrapped using appropriate material and stored in labeled boxes. Labeling is beneficial especially when reassembling and unpacking in your new home. Screws, nuts and bolts should be gathered in seal-able plastic bags then taped or placed to the main parts or in boxes with correct labels.

Packing

To make certain that the furniture won’t slip or be exposed, sufficient amount of tape or string needs to be used to pack or wrap around it. Packing paper may be utilised in covering glass table tops then placing them in telescoping cardboard or if these resources are not available, you can always improvise with old blankets or towels in casing tabletops. Mattresses and sofas may be packed in special plastic covers for protection against ripping, staining or moistening. An alternative to these special plastic covers should they not be obtainable are plastic shrink wraps.

After everything has been disbanded and packed, the process of moving continues to the loading of the furniture onto the truck or vehicle to be used in moving. A dolly may prove to be helpful in bringing heavy objects outside the house and in preventing personal injuries and damage to large items.

Secure the fixtures with the use of hooks or paneling on the truck interior. Balance the load of the truck by placing objects of alike weights on opposite sides of the truck. Mattresses must be loaded in an upright position to maximize space and allocate extra room for other items. Of course, there is no way to perfectly guarantee the safety and excellent condition of the fixtures to be transported. However appropriate packing may at least help reduce any uncalled for damages that may occur otherwise.
